Canary Wharf Has One of Europe's Biggest Concentration of Skyscrapers

Canary Wharf is a successful urban regeneration development on the Isle of Dogs in East London.

The London Docklands was formerly part of the Port of London which until the mid-1950s was the largest port in the world. They served huge industrial areas of east London and beyond. Then its status declined in the 1960s when the shipping industry introduced the container system of cargo transportation and London Docklands was unable to accommodate  the much larger vassels needed by containerisation.

This resulted in the closure of the docks between 1960 and 1980 and leaving around eight square miles of derelict land and high unemployment in East London.

During the 1980s and 1990s London Docklands was converted into a mixture of residential, commercial and light industrial area. Transport links to East London were improved with the Jubilee Line Extension and the Docklands Light Railways (DLR) extended to Beckton, Lewisham, London City Airport, North Woolwich and Stratford. This re-development has led to a massive hike in land prices and a property boom in the area.

Today, Canary Wharf is a vibrant district and has one of Europes's biggest concentration of skyscrappers and is a direct challenge to the media and financial dominance of the City of London.

Some of the old London Dockland warehouses have been converted into apartments and the docks are now being used as water-sport centres and marinas.

Leading international companies such as Credit Suisse, Citigroup and many others enjoy the highest quality buildings, facilities and infrastructure within London's newest business district. The working and residential population in Canary Wharf has increased tremendously.

Canary Wharf is a spacious and clean environment with 5 open spaces - Canada Square, Cabot Square, Jubilee Park, Churchill Place and Westferry Circus. You can have a lovely view of the City from the Canary Wharf Riverside and there is pier where you can catch a river cruise to Tower Bridge.

Canary Wharf is also a shopper's paradise with three shopping malls - Canada Place, Cabot Place and Jubilee Place. These shopping malls are linked to each other and there are lots of boutiques selling designer clothes. There are plenty of restaurants and take-aways and cafes.

The O2 Arena is located a short distance away from Canary Wharf and provides a superb and convenient entertainment venue for the working and residential population in this district.

The transformation of Canary Wharf from a London dock to what it is today is truly remarkable. It has broght about a pleasant change in the landscape with skyscrappers and has rejuvenated the economic structure of the area.
