Assen is the Capital of the province of Drenthe Netherlands. It is the fastest growing city in the northern part of the Netherlands.Assen lies encircled by picturesque villages, with a number of nature parks only a stone's throw away.

It is a main industries are clothing, paper, printing and food processing.

The city is not a very big city there for there are not that many bars.

In the old city centre are a lot of shops. The shopping centre within the centre of Assen is called the Forum. The forum is surrounded by numerous alleys offering smaller and much more attractive shops. There is a market down town on Saturdays.

For cabaret, performances, dance, music and movies go to the 'Theatre De Kolk' in Assen is the place to be. There is a theatre-cafe and three halls. Before Theatre De Kolk there was already a Concerthuis at the same place, built in 1851.

Assen's main claim to fame is the motor cycle racing circuit, where on the last Saturday in June the Dutch TT is run. Every year the Dutch TT draws a large number of visitors to the circuit. During the TT week there also parties in the city of Assen. The TT fun fair and the traditional TT night, at which live music is played. The circuit also has year round events.

Because of these monumental houses, the town was soon nicknamed the City of Palaces. The Nassaulaan is the connecting street between the city centre and the Forest of Assen. This street is also part of the cultural heritage area of the city. At this lovely street you can find a lot of beautiful and majestic houses, but also the deer park and the former grammar school. The old part of the city centre and the area west of it, concerning the Vaart, Torenlaan and Nassaulaan was declared National Cultural Heritage in 1988.

The Drents Museum is spread out over several old houses around Brink Square in village of Assen. The museum covers the history of the Drenthe province, and includes some interesting exhibits such as an assortment of prehistoric bodies from the early settlers who built the hunebeds the megalithic tombs built on the Hondsrug ridge. The museum also holds the oldest water vessel ever found.

The biggest Truck festival in the Netherlands, even in the northern part of Europe. Two thousand trucks from all over Europe come every year to Assen. There come with the most beautiful truck, truck racing, demonstrations, music, stunts, funfair and a lot more.
