Centerpiece of Bangkok’s own Champs D’Elysee

Built by the decree of King Rama V in 1907 and completed under the reign of King Rama the VI in 1915 Champs D’Elysee is a grand depiction of Thai culture ad history. Envisioned by the Italian architects Annibale Rigotti and Mario Tamango the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall is a masterful work of neo-classical renaissance architecture. Located on Dusit’s wide Royal Plaza’s leafy boulevard that is often the focal point of many royal celebrations from its completion to this current day and age.

Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall was where the first Thai parliament convened in 1932, but now serves as the premises in which state council meets, visiting dignitaries reside and a host to royal occasions. It was Thailand’s monumental revolution in 1932 from June 24th to the 27th that took place in the Throne Hall where the country’s political system was swapped from being an absolute monarchy to a constitutional system.

The Ananta Samakhom Throne Halls most regal and defining point of glory resides in its cavernous central dome reaching a height of 40 meters, under which the Royal Throne sits. The Throne hall exudes of luxurious murals, sculptures and a gate of gold at the entrance. Alongside the central dome are 6 other smaller domes where the walls are illustrated by painter Galileo Chini depicting Chakri Dynasty monarchs. The regal upper halls are embellished with embossed Roman and floral patters which exemplifies renaissance and baroque arts. The exterior of the building is encased in Carrara marble imported from Italy. The estate was built at an estimated cost of 15 million baht and took 8 years to complete.

The beautifully paved lush garden where the King Rama the V statue lies plays host to several local displays and pageantry. On Children’s Day in Thailand which is celebrated on the second Saturday in January each year, the Throne Hall is fully open to the public. The annual Trooping of the Colour in December and the Red Cross Fair in March is held in the plaza of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall. The Throne Hall is open all through out the year except on the King’s birthday the 5th of August, and the 12th of August which is the Queen’s birthday.

Located nearby is the Bangkok Royal President a Bangkok serviced apartment ideal for its easily accessible location to historical landmarks, business districts and entertainment venues. This Bangkok Sukhumvit Hotel provides the right combination of contemporary living and old world charm.
