Costa de la Luz in Andalucia: Puerto de Santa Maria

Puerto de Santa Maria, along the Costa de la Luz in Andalucia is perhaps one the region’s most interesting hidden gems. It is a quiet city teaming with beautiful Andaluz architecture and quaint, cobblestone streets lined with orange trees. it is definitely worth to spend a nice Costa de la Luz holiday there.

The city is famous for its abundance of world-class sherry produced in its numerous wineries, all of which are open to the public for visits. During the spring festival, known as the Feria de la Primavera, it is estimated that more that 180,000 bottles of local sherry are passed around by locals and tourists alike. As a tourist you have the possibility to live in one of the numerous Costa de la Luz accommodations. You have the choice between a beautiful Costa de la Luz hotel or a comfortable Costa de la Luz apartment.

The Andalucians tend to be known for their love of festivity and throughout the year there are a number of events that offer a chance for revelers to take in the culture and colour of the region. These events truly invite you to a nice Costa de la Luz holiday. The Dia de la Virgen del Carmen is a day to honour the patron Saint of Puerto de Santa Maria and in July, her image is revered and paraded through town to mark a wonderful day of festivities. Spring festivals are numerous and in Feria season in August, traditional bullfighting takes place in the famous bullring in the town’s centre, where thousands of spectators gather. During the summer months especially, the parties start late in the evening and last all night – there is a reason for the traditional Spanish siesta!

As a true Spanish fishing town, Puerto de Santa Maria has become known as a destination for food lovers and the area is lined with an abundance of restaurants and food stalls showcasing local seafood, fruits and vegetables. Be sure to seek out the Ribera del Marisco, where you can sample seafood as it comes fresh off the boats.

This lovely city also enjoys the luxury of a climate blessed with an abundance of sunshine and no matter when you travel there, you’re likely to enjoy marvelous weather. The beaches are clean and sandy and the water is clear. You can find nice Costa de la Luz Hotels really close to the beach. The natural beauty of the area is not to be ignored and outside of the city centre there is ample opportunity to explore the flora and fauna of the region. Two natural parks, the Sierra de Grazalema and El Coto Doñana, are located within a short drive from the city and for those with a passion for nature they are a must see.

Andalucians are a people with a true sense of hospitality and the fact that Puerto de Santa Maria has largely been spared the massive development found along the Costa de Sol means that travellers get a more authentic taste of local life. It is certainly worth the visit.
