Do You Know About Manchester’s Past?

Every city has its secrets, and while we wander around the streets we see today, an altogether different story lies in the past, waiting to be discovered.

This is the case with Manchester just as it is with many other cities in the country. What better way to find out what the city used to be like in years gone by than to visit some of its museums?

The Museum of Science and Industry is a classic example. If you have any interest at all in these subjects, make sure you pay a visit. There are plenty of exhibits that cannot fail to catch your attention, such as the Baby. This is a huge computer that was built at the University of Manchester, and heralded the new age of computing. Despite the name it is huge – and well worth seeing.

You can also see cotton machinery in action and see what the railway station platform was like in what used to be Liverpool Road Station. This is a full day out experience and there is plenty more to discover – all for free too.

Elsewhere in Manchester you can go and see the Museum of Transport as well. This is a haven for restored buses, trams and much more besides. The oldest bus is one that was drawn by a horse more than a century ago, but it looks stunning as it has been brought back to life and painted to look just as it would have done back then.

These modes of public transport have changed remarkably through the years in Manchester. If you live locally you may remember some of them from your younger years. It is fascinating to see those that existed long before then as well, when the fares were much cheaper than they are now!

Perhaps the best museum of all to visit if you want to learn more about Manchester’s past is the Manchester Museum itself. This has countless galleries and exhibits to see, including dinosaur bones and a T. rex which goes by the unlikely name of Stan. You’ll feel as if you are back in the prehistoric period when you see everything the museum has to show you.

Alongside the more general displays such as this there are displays which take you back into Manchester’s history as well. The Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era are just two of the time periods you can travel back to.

If you fancy making a weekend of it, flights to Manchester are easy to book and will take you there nice and quickly. All you have to do then is decide which museums to visit first, and enjoy the many lessons and insights they will bring you about this fascinating city.
