Dublin Hotels; More Than Just a Roof Over Your Head

If you mention England to a tourist, they automatically think of London. Likewise, if you were to mention Italy, tourists would think of Rome; France/Paris, Germany/Berlin and Ireland/ Dublin…it is an automatic association that people have with countries and their capital cities, that’s why visitors to all countries invariably visit that country’s capital; it will come as no surprise then that Dublin is Ireland’s most visited city; not only by tourists, but by people on City breaks as well.

Now you may notice that I have picked Dublin out specially, from all the capitals named above; and there is good reason for this. For me, one of the things that really makes a holiday is the hotel that you stay in; whenever I have stayed in any of the excellent Dublin Hotels, I have always found that they exceeded my expectations. The things that I found that differentiate Dublin hotels from others are just little things, but they make all the difference; it’s almost like stepping back in time to an era that you thought was ling past. It’s not that the staff in the Dublin hotels are affecting certain a certain manner, it’s that their mannerisms and hospitality are genuinely the way they are.

As an example, let me relate something that happened in one of the Hotels in Dublin. I happened to be in the hotel bar one evening, when I noticed someone buy a packet of cigarettes from the barman; now instead of just handing over the cigarettes, the barman opened the packet and slightly withdrew a cigarette from the packet ready for the purchaser to use. To many, this will not mean anything, but this ritual was the commonplace in civilised establishments right here in England during the 40’s, 50’s and some of the 60’s; to see it in Dublin as a courteous norm was really heartening.

That’s not all though, another thing that I noticed was that staff in the hotels in Dublin kept asking if what they had just done for you was satisfactory; now, I could tell that this was not just a practiced affectation; they genuinely wanted to please…now where else do you still get that?

What I really appreciate about Dublin hotels though, is that they will automatically go over and above what is expected in order to make your stay memorable and happy; they will ask where you are going in order to help you with recommendations, they will happily pack you a lunch if you wish and above all they have a civic pride that wishes you to experience the best of their City.

Succinctly put; when you book into a hotel in Dublin; you’re getting far more than just a roof over your head.

I am of course, not referring to the renaissance trumpet-like instrument that resembled an elongated, bent recorder but to the well known delicious crispy baked wafer covered with chocolate and filled with various flavoured ice-creams. But why refer to this at all?

Treat yourself to Some Time Out

The other day I was privy to something quite surprising and rather insightful; it was during a coffee break at work when I was relaxing with my brew, that I overheard a few colleagues engaging in one of those usual coffee break/have a grumble/get back to work sessions and it was at that instant when the moment of insight came.

Gastronomic Prague

By: Dixie Briggs | 28/07/2008 | Destinations
When I was a child, my family were friends with an elderly lady who used to clean the large complex where we used to rent a flat. Mrs Mac, as we were accustomed to calling her was a grand old lady and was from an era long gone; when she had cleaned, not only was everything immaculate, but all the wooden fittings shone and smelled of that real beeswax polish that was de rigeur in days past.

Not Elvis

By: Dixie Briggs | 14/07/2008 | Theater
“We’re Oliver’s Army”, the small strangely attired group told me. “Fantastic…Elvis Costello fans…you probably don’t want to go to Chelsea”, said I teasingly. Of course, this was completely lost on the group’s young members as I knew it might be, but I was really just amusing myself; let me explain. I was standing outside the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane waiting to see Oliver the Musical
