Kek Lok Si Temple is renowned for being one of the finest Buddhist temple not alone in Penang Island but in South-East Asia. Standing tall atop Ayer Hill in the outskirts of Georgetown, the temple is an architectural beauty, erected in tiers and adorned in colorful shades & designs. The temple is known to be the largest in Malaysia, which keeps on growing.
The construction of the Kek Lok Si Temple in 1893 was carried out under the guidance of the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple. However, the seven-tiered pagoda, which is referred to many as the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, was only completed in 1930 constructed to reflect Chinese Thai and Burmese architectural styles. This marvelous structure symbolizes the devotion to both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. The surrounding scenic gardens, eclectic ponds and enamoring sculptures were constructed over the space of twenty years, delicate in design and artistry.
When arriving at the foot of Ayer Hill, visitors and pilgrims will be first met with the preceding prayer hall, which is home to thousands of miniature Buddha structures embedded into niches within the wall itself. Moving further away from the hall, the sunken garden with its gazebo and current prayer hall is in view. Within the prayer hall, visitors will find the intricate carvings upon walls, pillars and ceilings. The pagoda is within reach of the prayer hall, and pilgrims must move beyond it to get to the destination. Walking through the pagoda, take in the various styles and décor lining the walls of the temple denoting various stages and references to the life of the Buddha.
Admission to this marvelous attraction is made available to the public free of charge, where prayers and spiritual acts are allowed in peace and serenity. For those on pilgrimage who wish to view the Kuan Yin statue is allowed to take a ride on the lift, which is available with a fee of RM 2.
