Edinburgh in its Summer Glory

Edinburgh is certainly a city to be enjoyed year-round. After all, it is home to countless museums, galleries and other cultural attractions, while hosting countless events throughout the year - one of the most famous being the Hogmanay street party in the winter. Yet the most renowned of Edinburgh's attractions is undoubtedly the Edinburgh Festival - bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the city each August to experience an arguably unrivalled burst of culture and life.

If you've never experience the Edinburgh Festival before, there's never been a better year to discover what it's all about. If you have had the pleasure of attending the festivities in the past, now is the time to delve into its newest and most exciting offerings.

One thing to note about the Edinburgh Festival is that the event is actually a compilation of various different festivals: the International Festival, Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Book Festival, Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Jazz Festival and Edinburgh Mela. The big advantage, however, is that all of these festivals occur concurrently, or at about the same time, mostly in August. The city erupts with events, performances, entertainment and displays - all in the name of culture and the arts.

This year's International Festival includes the themes of the Enlightenment and Homecoming, with theatre, music, opera, dance and the visual arts coming together to create an extraordinary programme. The Fringe - the largest arts festival in the world - will also undoubtedly be one of the festival's most popular events, staging some 2000 shows during August. Another of the largest celebrations of its kind, the Book Festival will host more than 700 events for booklovers of all ages, with many of the events celebrating Scotland's rich literary heritage.

The Jazz and Blues Festival - running from 31 July to 9 August this year, will bring music to Edinburgh's parks, concert halls and bars throughout the city, and will celebrate Jazz and Blues of all styles. The Edinburgh Mela - Scotland's biggest intercultural festival - will offer visitors tastes from across the globe with ethnic food stalls, dance performances, live theatre shows and musical sets.

Finally, one of the most famous events at the Edinburgh Festival, as well as one of Scotland's most iconic events - the Military Tattoo - will once again delight the countless visitors who set their eyes and ears upon the performance. Since the Tattoo's beginning in 1950, more than 12 million people have experienced the event and more than 40 countries have been represented with an array of bands and displays - so it's no wonder the Military Tattoo sells out each year!

August is the most exciting time to visit Edinburgh, although not the cheapest month to get an Edinburgh flight, having the chance to see such renowned events as the Edinburgh festival make the whole trip worthwhile.
