Ayurveda, Yoga and Massage are the key elements of any India Ayurveda tour. While staying in the traditional Ayurvedic health resorts, you can experience the best of aromatic oil massages, clay, milk & herb treatments and various other therapies. Be it the Ayurveda tours in India or the Yoga tours, the age old medical science offers you a wonderful opportunity to stay as close to the mother nature as possible.

Ayurveda, literally meaning 'the Science of Life', shares an age-old relationship with India. Basically Ayurveda and Yoga are evolved from India only and have been practiced here for centuries. It is a holistic healing science in which the medicines are prepared from natural and organic materials making it the only totally eco-friendly medical science now known.

The origin of this ancient Indian medical science dates back to the era when Vedas (the oldest available classics of the world) were created. This system of traditional medicine native to India deals with the maintenance of health and relief from disease. It focuses on exercise, yoga, meditation and massage.

Basic Principles

Ayurveda says that the human body consists of three primary life forces or biological humors (Tridoshas)- Vatha, Pitha and Kapha. Proper health requires a balance among these three life forces. Otherwise these can cause a state of unhealthiness or disease. The Ayurvedic treatment is known for its 'Panchakarma therapy', which includes cleaning enemas, nasal medication, Purgation, Emesis and blood letting. There are a total of eight disciplines of Ayurveda treatment, namely:

  • Shalya-chikitsa (Surgery)

  • Salakyam (Treatment of diseases above the clavicle)

  • Kaaya-chikitsa (Internal medicine)

  • Bhuta vidya (Demonic possession)

  • Kaumarabhrtyam (Paediatrics)

  • Agadatantram (Toxicology)

  • Rasayanam (Prevention and building immunity)

  • Vajikaranam (Aphrodisiacs)

Ayurvedic Treatments

Ayurvedic therapies work on the processes of 'Tonification' and 'Reduction'. On one hand, Tonification methods nurture insufficiency in the body while Reduction therapies, on the other, decrease excesses in the body. Reduction therapies are further categorized as 'Pacification' (done with herbs, fasting, exercise, sunbathing and exposure to wind) and 'Purification' (a special form of therapy for elimination of the disease causing humors).

Ayurveda tours in India offer hundreds of Ayurveda therapies specially designed for different kinds of disorders/diseases. A few most popular therapies are: Pizhichil, Njavarkizhi, Sirodhara, Vasthi, Sirovasthi, Nasyam, Kizhi, Dhara, Avisnanam etc.

Ayurveda is practiced in various Ayurveda Resorts in different parts of India, out of which Kerala and a few regions in north India top the chart. The equable climate and natural abundance of forests (herbs and medicinal plants) in Kerala make it the best suited place for Ayurvedic treatments. Kerala is believed to be the only state in India which practices this system of medicine with complete dedication.
