Enjoying The Unique Topiaries at the Disney World Resort

The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival that takes place at Orlando's Walt Disney World Resort showcases splendor and beauty at every turn. Epcot is probably the most overlooked of all of Disney's theme parks, but the festival with its sunny gardens in full bloom helps you appreciate it more. What adds more to this occasion than the typical flower gardens and HGTV sponsor stands are the unique plants turned into art.

The park is filled with over 100 different topiaries fashioned in the shape of Disney characters. You can see the classic favorites, like Minnie and Mickey, Donald and Daisy, or Goofy or you can enjoy the new topiaries, which enjoy their premiere right at the entrance of the world showcase. New topiaries include Buzz and Woody from the Toy Story Trilogy, in addition to Lightning McQueen, everyone's favorite racecar from Cars and Cars 2.

Topiary History

While he was touring Europe, Walt Disney himself thought of the idea of creating topiaries out of Disney characters. Since 1963, Disney has collaborated with both landscape artists and animators to create characters out of 3 different topiary types: traditional, trained ivy, and sphagnum.

Types of Topiaries

Topiaries are alive, and this is the first thing you might want to know. They are not painted or cut and glued to create the form or shape envisioned. They have to be coaxed and sculpted and trimmed and watered with loving care. Made from shrubs, traditional topiaries are sculpted into shape with careful pruning. This process takes 3 - 10 years. Traditional topiaries are the least common at Walt Disney World Resort, although they are the type that most people are familiar with.

For sphagnum topiaries, wire and moss are used to create the shape, while vines, flowers, and other plants are filled in to achieve the character's shape. Trained Ivy topiaries use ivy that grow around a skeletal form made out of wire. The topiaries seen within Walt Disney World Resort are the products of the combination of these two methods preferred by Disney artists. The older ones are maintained in the off-season and come back each year until they are retired.

A visit to Walt Disney World Resort during the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is definitely a treat, thanks to the topiary and landscape artists from Disney. With just a couple of the magnificent floral creations on display, you can literally take hundreds of pictures. The fragrant scent of the plants will also delight you in the process. The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is truly a completely unique and unforgettable experience offered by Walt Disney World Resort.
