Occupying a prime location on theFort Point Channel at Children's Wharf lies a Bostonian institution that is dedicated to the education and enrichment of future generations. Popularly known as BCM, the Boston Children's Museum is a centuries old establishment of education and entertainment specially developed for the needs of children. Having opened its doors to the public in 1912 with a small collection of rocks and minerals the museum's exhibits have grown to reach over 50,000 items in the recent past. The collections include historical artefacts and items of cultural significance that are divided into six sections dubbed General Cultural Collections, Americana, Native American, Japanese, Natural History and Global Dolls.

Permanent exhibits at the museum include interactive displays such as Construction Zone, Arthur & Friends, Boston Black, Art Studio, Countdown to Kindergarten, Japanese House, The Common, Global Gallery, Johnny's Workbench, The Gallery, Peep's World and The Recycle Shop in addition to KidStage, PlaySpace, Kid Power, PlayLab, New Balance Climb and the Science Playground. Highlights include the Art Studio where parents and children can engage in creative artwork and Johnny's Workbench which allows children to use natural elements and tools to create their own woodwork masterpieces. Kids can play with bubbles and discover the natural world and scientific theories at Science Playground while the Recycle Shop allows them to make crafts from recycled items. Riding a Bobcat and play using trucks and jackhammers is all the rage at Construction Zone while a giant chess game, light displays, musical chairs and a host of other activities are on offer at The Common.

The two-floored Japanese House from Kyoto serves as a cultural exchange with Asian traditions with a focus on the art, family life and architecture of Japan. Kids aged below three years of age will find plenty to do at PlaySpace where toy trains, transparent painting walls and a tree house are available in addition to quiet corners where infants can simply rest. Children with a flair for performance arts however can head down to KidStage where those who love art explore paintings and exhibits on display at the 2,500-square-foot Globe Gallery and The Gallery sectors.

After a busy day of exploring guests can step over to the first floor lunch room  for a snack and later pick up quirky souvenirs and gift items to take back home from the Museum Shop.
