Exploring Rome by district

One of Europe's largest and most romantic cities, Rome is a must-see for anyone travelling through Italy.

A cultural capital that's also home to some of oldest ruins and buildings in history, Rome has plenty to see. However, planning a route can be a tiring and confusing process, as the city is huge and can take days to navigate.

Luckily, Rome has been arranged into a number of districts that each contain interesting museums, attractions and restaurants for visitors to see. Seeing Rome one district at a time is a great way to see great sights and understand the city better.

The Modern Centre is where most of the hotels and tourist-centred restaurants are located. Here you can also see the famous fountain at the Piazza della Repubblica. Be sure to stop by the Trevi Fountain and toss a coin into the water – legend has it that all visitors who follow this traditional are guaranteed to return to Rome.

For a taste of the truly traditional, take a walk throughout Old Rome. This part of town boasts some of the biggest tourist attractions, including the Piazza Navona – a great place to rest amongst great history, including the Pantheon.

Within Old Rome sits the Forum and Coliseum – these are arguably the most popular and impressive sights to see in Rome. Fight the crowds and see both attractions for their historical significance and amazing architecture that has been preserved throughout history.

One of the most well known attractions in Rome isn't technically part of the city. Vatican City is considered an identity unto itself, though it's located inside Rome. Tourists will find St Peter's Basilica here, and on certain days there's even a chance of the Pope making an appearance!

The districts of Esquilino-San Giovani, Trastevere, and Aventino-Testaccio are all lesser known areas of Rome that many tourists will find to be off the beaten path. However, these areas are home to some amazing attractions, including Testaccio Market and the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

No matter where you decide to go in Rome, you're sure to find attractions that are interesting and historical.

It's so simple to get to Rome, and it's worth taking the time to explore everything this great city has to offer. With many airports, there are flights to Rome from cities around the world every day.
