Exploring the Northland of Whangarei - Ngunguru

Enjoy the scenic drive on your way to sleepy Ngunguru, which translated from its Maori language to mean ‘rumbling tides’. Perhaps the most endearing part of Ngunguru is what you find along the way there. Before actually starting your 26 kilometre journey from Whangarei, make a stop at the Whangarei Falls that are located in the city limits. Always something to be admired, these falls have pools and a river to be explored. Also a great place to have a picnic, the Whangarei Falls is frequented by locals and tourist alike who brave abseiling down the wet rocks.

The first ten kilometres of your journey will take you through some of the oldest and lush market gardens that grow vegetables and fruits. It was built over a hundred years ago to serve the European settlement that grew at the basin of the Hatea River. During the season you will be spoiled for choice with a selection of organic and fresh produce that you can buy directly from the farmers. Take your pick from a mouth watering selection of kiwi, strawberries, avocados, oranges and others items like vegetables, flora and fauna. Look out for other farms along the way, like your traditional sheep farms, emu and even alpaca farms along with some olive groves.

Make a pit stop at the Glenbervie School that was built in 1893 for the children in the surrounding area. Kiripaka was once a populated town that is now non-existent and no sign of the bustling town remains. However, it is an ideal spot for a picnic and a place to spot native plants and herbs growing close to the river banks.

Beyond the winding roads you will begin to hear the oceans of Ngunguru, and get glimpses of the sandy coastal beach. Overlook the Manaia Mountain over the sparkling waves and take time out to watch nature and appreciate the picture perfect world in front of you. Take time to explore Whangarei’s beautiful destinations from the convenience of a Whangarei hotel. Enjoy the comforts and a style of living you can only get used to once you check in at one of the Millennium Hotels nearby. And be enchanted by the many Whangarei tourist attractions.
