Pushkar a town in India's Rajasthan state inherits a unique cultural and religious legacy as one of the most ancient of Indian cities. According to legend the Hindu god Brahma was responsible for the city's creation, and Pushkar is the site for one of the few existing temples dedicated to this god. Pushkar Lake also draws devotees who cleanse themselves in the holy waters. In recent times Pushkar has become an attractive location for foreign visitors.

Each November the usually laidback town transforms into a hive of activity, with a colourful exotic ambience that never fails to enchant the visitor. The occasion is the Pushkar Festival, also known as the Pushkar Fair; the town and all its inhabitants enthusiastically involve themselves in the festivities. The fascinating culture of the region mesmerizes the beholder with the colourfully attired natives engaging in age-old customs amidst the golden sands of Rajasthan.

The vividly decorated cattle and camels, mesmerizing traditional events, adventure competitions, a multitude of shops and stalls, meditating swamis and hospitable natives combine to create an unforgettable experience. A huge variety of stalls and kiosks display a bewildering variety of items. Even body tattooing is available. At night the fresh desert air is punctuated by folklore dramas, folk dances, music and the cries of the camels.

Pushkar and its environs provide a variety of exciting experiences and activities for the visitor. The town possesses a multitude of temples, with pride of place going to the Brahma Temple. This imposing marble building adorned with silver coins is sacred to Hindus. According to tradition a lotus dropped from God Brahma's hand, and the sacred lake materialized on the spot.

Exploring the desert of Rajasthan on camel back is an experience like no other. The sands gleaming in the sunrise or sunset, delectable traditional Rajasthani meals and unique cultural performances will delight the visitor.
