November 19, 1952 was a historic day in the Maldives as far as the country is concerned. This tropical nation celebrated its National Day by creating the first ever National Museum of its kind. The museum located within the Sultan Park still stands through the many years as one of the city's leading tourist attractions and historical sites.
The museum, which has been preserved for over five decades, is one of the city's prized possessions. The structure boasts elegant architecture and houses some of the island's ancient artifacts and royal antiques during the pre-Islamic era. It also illustrates ancient culture; various traditions and a plethora of historical artefacts are showcased here.
Visitors to the museum will find its belongings quite interesting, as a number of these collections date back to the early years of this beautiful land. Stone fragments of all kinds are also set within the shelves of the establishment. This natural attraction situated in Male is a three-storied building, which was once a part of the Maldivian Royal Palace dating back to the 17th century. However, after the demolition of the Palace in 1968, the National Museum was the only remaining structure.
The museum's interior has been retained however, from the days of the sultanate. Visitors can see handwritten engravings of the Qur'an illustrated on the walls of the building. Some of the stand out collected works displayed at the museum include a wooden engraved plank used in the 13th century, an 11th century head of the Lord Buddha created out of coral and the Feyli Kolhu, a suit worn by the Sultan in the 16th century.
Further to these attractions, a diverse collection of ancient artefacts are also displayed inside the museum; a visitor will find costumes and shoes, royal sunshades and furniture, arms and armour, thrones, ornaments, coins, textiles, turbans, dresses, belts, embroidery, mats and an array of other exhibits.
The National Museum in the near future has plans to expand its halls in order to facilitate more exhibits and to increase the number of collections.
