Fredericksburg and LBJ Texas: Learn about the Man and the Places He Loved

Posted: Jun 01, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Drove to Johnson City, TX, the boyhood home of LBJ.  He, with his one brother, three sisters, and his parents, lived in a modest house from five years until he went to college. Their ranch, the family homestead, was having financial problems.  So his father tried real estate, politics, and anything else, which would bring food to his family's table.

Fifteen miles further west is the LBJ ranch at Stillwell, TX. Taking his first and last breaths on this piece of land, he returned here regularly to recharge his batteries.  The only way to visit the ranch is via a NPS 1.5 hour guided tour aboard a tram.  Whether you love or hate the man, you learn about the man's passion.  The vistas of the Texas hill country, the herds of wild deer and antelope, all visible on the tour, fueled his soul.  As a man he spearheaded legislation for the Great Society, which included Project Head Start, Rural electrification, Medicare and Medicaid, Civil Rights, and the beautification of America.  He will also be remembered for the escalation of the conflict in Viet Nam.

The tour stops at the reconstructed birth house; the family cemetery, the Texas White House (inaccessible) and the cattle show barn.  The Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm highlights German culture in the early 20th century where docents dressed in appropriate garb demonstrate living on a farm.

Another fifteen miles west is the town of Fredericksburg, a German immigrant community.  Admiral Nimitz called this place his home.  A museum dedicated to the WWII in the Pacific and a walk of honor to all the personnel who served in the Pacific Theater are also on the property.  Tourists flock to Fredericksburg for the good German food, the brewpubs, and the specialty shops.

A special place, closed on Sundays, is Rustlin' Robs where everything edible made in Texas can be sampled.
