Founded in 1995 it is today the second largest of its kind in the southern United States and draws in more than 10,000 visitors each year.
The event was recently named as a signature event of the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau, which underlines the importance of this event to the local community. This event runs for four consecutive days and showcases films that give voice to the unique problems faced by the gay and transgender community. Through the ages these two segments of society have been repressed and not been allowed to express themselves in public. The North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, attempts to compensate for this decade long repression by allowing such movies to be screened to a wider audience.
Thus, the role of this film festival is two-fold; one to celebrate LGBT culture and secondly to educate the general public of the trials and tribulations that are faced by them. This film festival though being an integral part of the Gay and Lesbian social calendar is by no means the only such event in North Carolina. The annual NC Pride Parade that has been organized for the last 25 consecutive years also draws in many visitors to Durham.
Homosexuality-related events in Durham may still be in its infancy, yet there are a number of events that entice visitors to come here. Despite being labeled the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, this event is also a must see for all cinema buffs. Mostly due to the quality of the work that is exhibited by the organizers.
