Europe is absolutely full of wonderful cities and countries that few people actually go to. As soon as mass tourism hits the city, prices tend to go up and they are generally no longer good places to go if you are on a tighter budget. This article will give you a few ideas and hopefully serve as an inspiration for you if you are planning a cheap trip to Europe.
You will generally find that Eastern Europe is cheaper than Western Europe although this rule is rapidly becoming vaguer. There are also many more places in the east which are relatively undiscovered by tourism and this tends to be true that further east you go. Nonetheless, places which do not have a high tourist infrastructure can be difficult to travel in but if you are a seasoned backpacker, you should have little difficulty.
Here are a list of some of my favourites;
Although exceptionally busy in the summer, Prague does still manage to be a relatively cheap destination to go to. It is also famed to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and also amongst the most fun. Provided you find the right places to go out there, you can be sure that you are a great time, some of the best food in Europe and some unforgettable sightseeing. Even better, if you go to other towns in Czech Republic, you can find some particularly wonderful places which have everything to offer its are extremely cheap. In my opinion, the most underrated place in Czech Republic is undoubtedly the small city of Hradec Kralove, a place well worth a visit and barely two hours by bus from Prague.
Although starting to get quite busy as well now, the various Polish cities such as Kraków and Gdansk are well worth a visit. You might also like Warsaw which is a particularly impressive city magnificently rebuilt having been destroyed in the Second World War. Although Poland is certainly not the bargain it used to be, it is still considerably cheaper than many other popular destinations.
However, if you really are looking to get off the beaten track and spend very little money then I would honestly have to say that the Ukrainian city of Lviv really is top of the draw. There are all kinds of accommodation options there including an excellent backpacker’s hostel and indeed the only one in the country. Citizens of the European Union and the United States no longer need visas to get there either and it is not particularly difficult to travel in Ukraine as the tourism infrastructure is slowly starting to build up. Now is the best time to go there and you can be sure that you can happily budget for $30.00 a day and that’s assuming you want to eat in restaurants all the time.
