Great Wall of China - A Jaw Dropping Feat of Ancient Engineering

Considered to be an amazing feat of architectural and engineering brilliance, China’s Great Wall is an everlasting symbol of its imperial past and ancient heritage. Considered one of the seven great wonders of the world the Great Wall is the longest architectural structure in the world stretching for over 600 kilometers. The entire wall when put together stretches over 800 kilometers including the actual wall structure, trenches and natural defensive barriers such as rivers and hills.

The wall was constructed as a defensive mechanism from nomadic invaders who had threatened the Chinese Rulers through successive dynasties. The Great Wall construction started off in 5th Century BC, and was reconstructed, remodeled and expanded up till 16th Centaury by various dynasties and rulers of the Chinese empire.   The wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in West, forming a formidable defense structure which protected China from enemies outside.  Today only a little of the actual wall remains, while most of it reduced to mere foundations. However, what is left of it is even visible from space running down as a small thread around China’s historic boarders.

During the initial phases of construction material such as Taipa, wood and stones were used to build the structure, however later on most notably during the Ming Dynasty bricks were used heavily along with tiles and limestone. The wall also included watchtowers and small garrisons where troops could be stationed which made sure the walls are patrolled regularly and is protected from enemy attacks.

Some of the most notable areas of the Great Wall are located in the Beijing Municipality, visited by tourists regularly. The Badaling Great Wall also known as North Pass is a mountain pass of the Jundu Mountain. This part of the wall garrisoned many troops due to its strategic location close to the capital of the empire. The Great Wall includes many interesting sections to be explored; Jinshanling is a section of the wall that is located in the winding mountainous area in Luanping County consisting of 5 passes, 67 towers and 2 beacon towers.

For those who wish to explore this magnificent structure, the best place to be would be Beijing as it holds much of the preserved wall opened to tourists and visitors. Accommodation could be planned at a hotel in Beijing such as Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing located in the heart of the city close to many other attractions as well. This luxury hotel in Beijing is also a great place to enjoy great cuisine and relax during your stay.
