Hawa Mahal – The Mesmerizing Palace of Winds

Undoubtedly, India is a country known to be a melting pot of diverse cultures. The streets are often filled with people from all over the country, from the city and urban areas to the rural and village areas.  Having a number of people who have originated from different cultures in different geographical areas, the people of India are proud of their culture.  Enriched by the western influence from the colonial period, their cultural heritage seem to have blended flawlessly, mingling and fusing with other influences to create an eclectic environment of Indian life.

Evoking a sense of genuine belonging, Hawa Mahal is a palace, found in Jaipur. A stunning history that is often filled with arduous trials and euphoric victories, Hawa Mahal is perhaps one of its most majestic and grandest palaces. Linguistically, the definition of Hawa Mahal translates to "Palace of Winds", which perfectly describes the atmospheric setting of the structure. Towering above, this five storey building is one of kind, which speaks volumes of its architectural brilliance and ingenuity from the first glimpse.

As you set eyes on the massive structure, perhaps the most alluring character which stands out that is simply a trait that one cannot simply look away from is its bee-hive windows. Drawing the undivided attention of the onlooker, the palace wholly captures a facade of a honeycomb formation, which is emphasized further by its intricate and elaborate lattice work.  Kindling a sense of wonder at its 953 windows, each of them seem to portray many thresholds, welcoming its guests. Called ‘Jharokhas", these lattice adorned windows were made according to the preconceived notion of giving liberty to the royal ladies in order for them to have a glimpse beyond their closed surroundings. Looking beyond the streets, they were able to view the every life, glancing at the streets below them as they had to observe "purdah" which means the face cover.

Wrapped in coloured sandstone of red and pink, the palace is located in the heart of Jaipur's main business centre. Illuminating a striking silhouette, especially in the wee hours of the morning, the golden rays of the sunlight perfectly grapples the interest of the beholder.

Featured within the interior of the building is the women's chambers called the Zenana. A chamber that is regarded as a harem; it was a place where the ladies of royalty resided. Shaped similar to a pyramidal structure, the historical palace towers 50 feet where one can easily see the domes, carved sandstone grills and finials. It founded the city of Jaipur's key identifier as the "Pink City", the colour of the monument being a testament to the epithet.

Representing the fusion of cultures, the architectural monument is a reflection of Islamic and Hindu influences. Its characteristics of arches and stone filigree belong to Islamic tradition whereas the Hindu style can be seen in the fluted pillars, domed canopies and floral and lotus patterns. There is a museum where visitors can easily stroll around and view the exhibits. Through the imperial door, there lies a large courtyard which provides a panoramic view of the backdrop.

For those who want to engross themselves in Jaipur sightseeing, there are many accommodations located near its finest attractions. One such destination is the Gateway Hotel Ramgarh Lodge Jaipur. This Jaipur hotel has impeccable services and a variety of leisure activities to suit your every mood.
