For many people, the process of deciding where to go for a romantic beach holiday is almost as much a part of the holiday experience as the holiday itself. Investigating and researching the countless places in the world to go for those 2-weeks in the sun, and the anticipation and excitement that this creates, only adds to the exhilaration that already exists when jetting off on that well-earned vacation.
But with so much of the world now exposed to the rigours of travellers and tourism, it isn’t as easy as it once was to find that luxury beach holiday; that unspoilt haven that many people dream of but rarely experience first-hand. But there is such a place, and that place is the tropical Island paradise of Mauritius.
As an island nation off the African coast in the southwest Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a tiny hub of idyllic sandy beaches, lagoons, coral reefs and forested mountains. In fact, if ever a themed tropical island was to be built, Mauritius would probably be the template on which it was based.
Although the picture-perfect setting of Mauritius makes it the ideal destination for a relaxing luxury beach holiday in Mauritius, there is also no shortage of activities to suit most couples.
Île aux Cerfs (French for ‘Deer Island’), is an even smaller tropical island just off the east cost of Mauritius, and is home to a stunning golf course as well as several beautiful beaches from which various waters sport activities can be enjoyed. Indeed, Mauritius has some stunning scuba diving sites, with an abundance of sea-life and coral reefs surrounding the island.
Then there is the cosmopolitan town of Flic-en-Flac, with its wealth of shopping centres, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and casinos; not to mention more than 3km of powder-white beaches, making it the perfect location for a romantic evening stroll.
And as a former British colony, English is the first language of Mauritius, making practical issues such as travelling and shopping a breeze. In fact, the island has a charming mix of cultures, religions and cuisine, meaning each day can bring a different experience from the previous, helping to cement Mauritius as one of the top 5-star holiday destinations in the world.
So, as far as tropical island paradises go, Mauritius is up there with the best of them. Its variety of activities, diverse scenery and vast sandy beaches make it the perfect place for a romantic beach holiday. It truly is heaven on earth.

By: wendy brant | 04/12/2009There is a supposition that when we retire, we are all comfortably in ‘coupledom’. The ads, the information sites, show nice air brushed, cozy pictures of couples, sweaters casually thrown round their shoulders deep in conversation, broad smiles on faces - or walking hand in hand towards the sunset. But some of us who retire and re-locate are actually on our own….divorce, death, just running away from the tedium of life as we know it.
