Leicester is the largest city and unitary authority in the English East Midlands. The city has long been a major commercial and manufacturing centre for the Midlands. It was originally a Roman settlement. In the early 20th century a Jewish community grew up in the High Fields area Leicester has had a traditional industry of knitwear, hosiery and footwear.
Leicester's central shopping region boasts several different shopping areas, St Martins has lots of shops and restaurants. The Haymarket Centre is at the heart of Leicester, The Shires home to some of the world's biggest fashion brands and The Stoneygate Shops.
It also has Europe's largest covered market. Traders first came to the city with the Romans and the current market has been on the same site for 700 years. Every year Leicester market hosts specialist markets German markets and a farmers market.
The city's has many clubs which are very popular for big nights out. Leicester has a thriving music scene with lots of talented local bands and singers. The Venue at the Students Union is one of the biggest and best student clubs in the country.
A multi-cultural city, and its cultural mix provides exciting opportunities to sample a huge variety of cuisines. There are so many good Indian restaurants in Leicester that you could visit a different one almost every week for a year.
Leicester Cathedral, is a Church of England cathedral in the English city of Leicester. A church dedicated to St Martin, the tower of the cathedral has 13 bells. These can be heard of Thursday Evenings and Sunday Mornings. The thirteen bells have inscriptions on them.
The National Space Centre is the UK's largest attraction dedicated to Space Science and astronomy. You can journey through the body of an astronaut, discover the perils of space and visit destinations you only ever dreamed existed. The Space Centre's futuristic Rocket Tower, you will be treated to hours of breath taking discovery where the stories, personalities and technology of the past and present are used to explain our current understanding of space. It is also a research base for University staff. The Space Research Centre was mission control for the UK first mission to another planet the Beagle 2 Mars Probe.
The City Gallery Comprising three exhibition spaces, including fine art and crafts. It has over forth thousand visitors per year. Touring exhibitions, including those from the Arts Council of England and the Crafts Council.
