Is Surfers Paradise on Australias Gold Coast Just for Surfers?

With 70km of beaches it's no wonder Surfers Paradise attracts so many visitors a year. Surfers Paradise, unsurprisingly enough is a popular place to learn to surf. There are numerous surf schools to choose from and therefore the price of learning to surf is kept quite low. A lot of the backpackers hostels also provide free hire or cheap hire of surfboards.

But it's not all about surfing there are lots of other things to do and see in this Gold Coast town. For example there are 21 theme parks and attractions to choose from on the Gold Coast, including Sea World, Dreamworld and Warner Brothers Movieworld.

If you like shopping though, Cavill Avenue is the place to go. Featuring so many surf clothing stores you have no excuse not to look like a professional, supermarkets and themed museums, Cavill Avenue and Cavill Mall in Surfers Paradise is the place to be seen.

The nightlife in Surfers Paradise is as popular as ever and there are many pubs and clubs to choose from.

One thing you probably won't see as much of, although they are still around, are meter maids. Metermaids are gold bikini clad women who instead of issuing tickets for expired parking they dispense coins into the meter and leave a calling card under the windscreen wipers.

A local businessman initially introduced the metermaids in 1965 as a countermeasure against the unpopularity of parking meters installed the previous year. However the Gold Coast city council is replacing the traditional parking meters with voucher meters so bikini clad metermaids won't be seen for very much longer.
