July cultural events in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro isn’t all about the annual carnival or all about the beaches or the nightlife, there are other attractions every month. For example, this month in Rio de Janerio there is a celebration called French Year in Brazil. This celebration starts off with an exciting and unique show of pyrotechnics from group F on the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. There will be a dozen of shows, spectacles, talks & debates and exhibitions in many areas of Rio. Some of the most important highlights of this celebration include “A rua é nossa … É de todos nós!” which means The street is ours… It’s everybody’s – will be presenting photographs, videos, and architecture as well as urbanism projects at the Centro Cultural Justiça Federal.

Other hotspots would be the “Meias Verdades” (Half Truths) exhibition which shows photos and videos made by Sophie Calle, Pierrick Sorin and Valerie Belin; the “Treasures of the Louvre” exhibition which presents sculptures made by Jean Antoine Houdon, who was a XVII century sculptor – at the Museu Histórico Nacional (National Historic Museum). At various venues in Rio there will be a panorama of the French Cinema. Other than that, Rio offers the Chagall exhibiton at the Fine Arts Museum and a meeting of the Pasteur Institutions network.

Moving on to another event which is at least as important as the French Year in Brazil, Rio offers Fotorio 2009 – Rio de Janeiro International Photographic Meeting which is a biannual event and its first edition was held back in 2003. The FotoRio had a huge impact and rapidly became an important reference point in the field of Brazilian photographic production, offering a wide range of shows of exhibitions, talks, urban interventions, workshops, seminars, all of them held in cultural centers as museums but also at commercial galleries and other spaces (Caixa Cultural for example).

Here you get to have a glance at the exhibition of photographs - "The Lebaneses cariocas show their value" which is a direct result of deep research on the lives of lebaneses immigrants as well as their direct descendents in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The images show their habits, dances, activities, faces and they also show how they integrated into the local population. The venue where tourists have the possibility to see all of these is UERJ - Espaço Núcleo MID (Memória, Informação e Documentação)
Rua São Francisco Xavier, 524 -2°andar /sala 2.002 Bloco C – Maracanã. The exhibition is open from 01 to 31.07.

As you can see Rio de Janeiro has a lot to offer besides the well-known beaches, nightlife and the carnival. Rio de Janerio is a mix of cultures and different cultural activities are being held every single month in Rio so if you want to extend your cultural knowledge, make a trip to Rio as there are a lot to see. Maybe this is the reason why more and more people are choosing Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as their next vacation destination because Rio is the place to go to if you are interested in finding out more information about various cultures from all over the world.
