Famous for exotic temples and erotic sculpture, Khajuraho is a small village in the state Madhya Pradesh. It is a symbol of India's glorious past, heritage and culture and the exotic temples here symbolise the immortal tale of Hindu art and culture.
The temples of Khajuraho are world famous. These are praised for the magnificent art form of
early medieval period. The sculpture and carvings and work on the walls of the temples are so intricately and wonderfully done that they fascinate the people of every age and the genius craftsman ship of that period really deserve high salute. The carvings and sculptures on the walls of the temple
are highly erotic and sensual actually these are regarded as revelation of human love and other emotions. Here the art forms raise to a much higher level, showing sensuality as an integral part of human relationship not as a degraded relationship.
Legends tell that the king of Khajuraho was Chandravarman who was a son of Hemvati, the daughter of Hemraj, the Royal priest of Kashi, and Moon God. Chandravarman started the construction of the temples in 9th and 10th century A.D. Later these were completed by other kings. According to history only 22 of 85 temples remain at present.

The temples of Khajuraho are divided under three zones. These are – Western Group of Temples, Eastern Group of Temples and Southern Group of Temples.
The Western Group – The largest of all temples group are the Western Group of Temples. These are the most renowned and dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu. This group boasts of having temples like Kandariya Mahadeo, the largest of all dedicated to Lord Shiva. Chaunsat Yogini Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali. Lakshamana Temple, dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The other temples in this group are Chitragupta Temple, Matangeswara Temple, Vishwanath Temple and Varaha Temple. The curving architecture and sculptures of these temples are as usual spell bound.
Eastern Group – There are two group of temples in Eastern Group. One group dedicated to Jain pantheon and other group of temples dedicated to Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The temples here include - Parsavanath Temple, Adinath Temple, Ghantai Temple, The Brahma Temple, The Vamana Temple, Hanuman Temple. The Eastern Group of temples lie very close to the Khajuraho village.
Southern Group – This group consists of two most important temples like the Dulah Dao Temple, and also the Chaturbhuja Temple. These are one of the oldest and dedicated to Lord Shiva and lord Vishnu respectively. The southern groups of temples lies 5 km from the Khajuraho village.
