Lake Windermere is England's largest lake, in the heart of the Lake District. It is 10.5 miles long and approx 1 mile wide. The water of the lake reaches a depth of around 220 feet and the lake is extremely popular with water sports enthusiasts as well as walkers who come to enjoy the scenic walks around various regions of this beautiful lake, where you can walk up hills and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the whole surrounding area.
Keswick is the biggest town in the Lake District with the population of 40,000, but the tourists here will be the number of 1,400,000 per year. The average temperature of the Lake District is 16? in summer, and 4? in winter.
Along the north shores of Windermere you will find the Victorian town of Ambleside, a very popular tourist destination. There is a ferry service runs along Windermere, and you can also hire boats, either motor or rowing. In fact, around Windermere, everyone can find interesting things for himself - fishing, boating, spectacular walks and views, historic buildings, horse riding, and much more!
Water is inspiration here. You will be surprised at huge Windermere and small Grasmere for the elaboration by nature. Keats, the famous romantic poet, said that Windermere can help people forget distinctions in their life: age and fortune. You will lose yourself in this beautiful scenery, forgetting time, and having a marvelous feeling of “ one day in paradise is equal to ten years on earth”.
The well-known British romantic poet, Wordsworth, who settled down here with his sister Dorothy. Wordsworth was named “Lake Poets” with other two poets, Coleridge and Southy, the “ Lake” of which is a beautiful lake of England Lake District. Besides, there was also an English author, illustrator, mycologist and conservationist lived here, Beatrix Potter, who was best known for her best-selling children's books that featured animal characters, such as Peter Rabbit.
In the late 19th century, wealthy businessmen from Lancashire built grand mansions overlooking the lake, and many of these have now been converted to hotels. Others houses include The National Park Visitor Center at Brockhole, between Ambleside and Bowness, and Wray Castle almost opposite Brockhole, and the first Lake District holiday home of Beatrix Potter.
You can get a local map and a bus timetable for free at Tourist Information Center which is next to the Windermere Train Station. The bus ticket of Lake District is divided into many categories, such as one way, round trip and through ticket, the prices of all of which are not very expensive.
