Christmas is one of the most special times of the year and we all dream of being in a place where the Christmas spirit is strong and the snow is falling. Lapland is the ultimate place to be at Christmas and they have their own customs and traditions in Lapland. The people of Lapland get just as excited as us when it snows and as more snow falls the winter activities can start.

Christmas begins on the first day of the advent, children in Lapland like here,  open their own advent calendar and the first Sunday in December will be the first day of the advent calendar. The next special day is Saint Lucia day which occurs on December 13th. Saint Lucia is celebrated all over Lapland with the lighting of the candles and lots of fun celebrations.  When the day of Saint Lucia has arrived and been celebrated, the buying of Christmas trees and the exchanging of cards will take place and this is when all of the children are extremely excited.

Christmas Eve is a very special time and will be celebrated by attending mass followed by a traditional sauna. Christmas Eve is extra special for the locals in Lapland and will be celebrated with all of the family together, as well as mass and a sauna,  the whole family will gather around and have a big meal together. During the meal, games will be played and songs will be song by all of the family.

The locals in Lapland will give their presents out on Christmas Eve and the children will enjoy a visit from Santa Claus. Christmas Day is celebrated too and is enjoyed by getting outside and becoming involved in lots of winter activities such as skiing, cross country skiing and snow walking. The locals in Lapland love the outdoors and although the winter is long at over 200 days, it is enjoyed to the full.

Visiting Lapland at Christmas is fantastic and makes the already wonderful time of year even more special.  Christmas traditionally ends in Lapland  thirteen days after Christmas day but Lapland remains the winter wonderland we all know and love for quite some time and lots of winter activities go on well into April and sometimes beyond.  When the snow begins to melt, Lapland gets ready to enjoy the summer time with lots of outdoor activities once again. In the summer time there are lots of things to enjoy including the midnight sun where there is 24 hour light for a few weeks of the year. The locals enjoy nothing more than walking up on the hillsides late into the evening where they can enjoy the 24 hour light and the beautiful scenery.
