Learn about History of Hamedan before You Travel to Iran

Posted: Jan 16, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

History of Hamedan is believed to have begun in 1100 BC as is evident from an inscription found about the first Assyrian king. But other historians have placed the construction of the place to 3000 BC. Studies have led to the belief that the Medes were responsible for the establishment of Hamedan. They made it the capital of the Median empire.

Consequently, it became an important capital city under the Achaemenid rulers. The town is also mentioned in the biblical book of Ezra. It is said that a scroll was found here in which King Darius helped Jews with the reconstruction of their temple in Jerusalem. The Ezra text refers to the city under the name of Ecbatana, meaning the place of reunion.

The Summer Capital

History of Hamedan points to the fact that the city served well to preserve leather-made documents owing to its height of 1 mile above sea level. Darius declared Hamedan his summer capital and moved to Susa for winter time. The Parthian kings made Ctesiphon the capital of their empire with this town being the summer capital. This custom was followed by the Sassanid rulers who also made this city their summer capital.

Before you travel to Iran and see this region, it will be good to learn that the battle of Nahavand took place in 633, during which the town was captured by the Muslim Arabs. The region was devastated during the rule of the Buwayhids. The 11th century witnessed the Seljuks making a change of their capital from Baghdad to Hamedan.

Involvement in World War I

When the Timurid invasion took place, the town was completely ruined according to the written history of Hamedan. The Safavid rulers returned the city to its prosperity but it again witnessed a downfall when it was taken by the Ottomans. However, Nader Shah Afshar freed the town from the invaders following a peace treaty signed between the Ottomans and Iranians.

Due to its location on the Silk Road, Hamedan used to benefit from good trade and was well known for its economic growth. The region again became the center of action during World War I, when there was fighting between Turko-German and Russian forces. The place was occupied by armies from both sides until the war ended in 1918. Despite all occurring at this part of the country, you will find out that people are living absolutely in peace here, like other parts of Iran.

When you decide where to visit during your travel to Iran, try to include this part of the country at your itinerary specially if you are looking for some pleasant weather in hot season. You will find its gardens, located at the outskirt of the city, charming and inviting.
