Learn the Lingo

Often embarrassingly, as Brits we regularly go on holiday knowing less than ten words of the native language, if a recent study is anything to go by.

Insurance compaby Sheila's Wheels asked over three thousand people what their holiday linguistic habots were, and the results were worrying and do nothing to combat the thought that Brits are rude when it comes to speaking other languages.

French, the main language that we learn in schools in the UK, was weak for the people polled, with candidates admitting that they could confidently say ten words in average in the language, despite one in ten making trips to the popular destination every year.

The average holiday maker also only knows around six words in Spanish, another popular destination, including ‘hello', ‘thank you' and ‘please'.

One in twenty people can say a handful of words in German, and fifty one percent of people are guilty of having not learnt any words in the language of their country.

To further compound the problem, it seems that forty six percent of us would be uncomfortable going to a restaurant and ordering food If the staff didn't speak our language, in their own country, which makes us look like a very rude nation. Twenty percent of people tend to choose to go to English speaking restaurants with English food, menus and speaking staff, meaning that they are missing out on some of the fabulous things that other countries and cultures have to offer us.

The head of the company, Jackie Brown, said "The results of this study put holidaymakers to shame, considering that these destinations – France, Spain, Italy and Germany – are all visited regularly by British people. We know English is one of the most known languages internationally, but it's rude and sometimes dangerous of us to assume that everyone understands English when travelling abroad. More importantly, if holidaymakers don't have the most basic knowledge of local languages, it is worrying that they will not be able to communicate in an emergency."
