Let Your Golfing Dreams Take Swing at the One and Only Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

Constructed by British servicemen in the latter part of the 1800's, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is a step back in time to an era distinct for its inherent grandeur and elegance. Located in an environment that can easily be mistaken for the Scottish highlands, this colonial golfing club offers visitors a truly unique golfing experience one wouldn't expect in a tropical island renowned for its sandy beaches. Set within a lush enclave nearly 2000 feet above sea level, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is the pride of this part of the emerald island called" Little England" for its cool climate and mountainous landscapes. Ranked as one of Asia's premier and most challenging golf courses, this championship range spreads out over an area that is part public park in the heart of the small hamlet. A picturesque course by any measure the venue features a plethora of diverse ground conditions which vary from rough to tight fairways and also includes a water barrier in the sixth hole. As an 18-hole golfing range of 6056 yards, the club is a Par 71 venue that suits both amateur and seasoned pros alike.

Ideal for straight hitters from the very first tee, the premier test tee shot is played in full view of the club house and is therefore all the more difficult. But amateur golfers needn't worry, as the dropped shots on the first par can be recovered on the second and fifth pars, where the green is easily reached by two.  The points between par 5 and 6 form the longest hole in the island nation with a spacious fairway that allows players to square their shoulders and pull out the driver. Flanked by a number of towering trees the driver at this pint of the fairway is particularly tricky and slanted shots are easily obstructed by the natural barriers. Experienced golfers will relish the creeks and crags that crisscross the fairways, lined with bunkers and unforgiving gorses although the danger of the bogey lurks in the horizon for those who are not tactful. Identified as ‘Little Switzerland' for their uncanny resemblance to the hills of the European nation, the 12th, 13th and 14th holes are some of the most scenic drives in the club.

A golfing gear and shoe rental is also available at the premise which also offers knowledgeable caddies to give players valuable insights on the terrain and relieve them of the hassle of lugging around the clubs to each hole.  After a great game of golf, the players can sit back and enjoy a drink at the Club House which stocks an impressive repertoire of spirits and beverages to suit all tastes. In addition to enjoying a scrumptious snack at the venue, amateur golfers also have the option of taking lessons from the club's seasoned coaches to improve their game.

Travellers in search of an ancient and luxurious bungalow in Nuwara Eliya should head down to the Jetwing Warwick Gardens at Ambewela.  Set within lush a 6-acre estate this centuries old resplendent residence is one of the most prominent Nuwara Eliya bungalows ever to be converted to a first class hotel.
