Lorca: an Ancient Village in Beautiful Spanish Holiday Countryside

Posted: May 08, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

The tranquil city of Lorca, situated 74 kilometres south-west of the city of Murcia, is the perfect place to book your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN. With a thirteenth century castle dominating Lorca, today the town has become an important commercial centre for the surrounding area. This is due largely to its transportation links which include both excellent rail and road routes. These transportation links give access to the towns of Granada and Almeria in the south and Valencia and Alicante in the north. As a result of this, Lorca has over the years become a major tourist destination. At one time, Lorca was a dangerous border town and was fought over by the Moors and Christians: this could be the reason the town is also known as "The City of a Hundred Coats of Arms". Lorca has a number of important historical sites scattered among the almond tree dotted countryside. This is a good area to take a long walk while you plan your day.

The land around Lorca is used to grow fruit and vegetables which is and was the town economic base for many centuries. This irrigation system that Arabs were mostly responsible for has made this agriculture system possible. Originally Lorca was built on the Guadalentin River which didn't always have water in it. This problem was alleviated when the Moors brought water from the Tagus River in the middle of Spain. Today Lorca is home to a growing service industry and a large pig farming community.

If you would like to do a little exploring in a historical sort of way, Lorca has a 16th century Church of San Francisco and the 17th century Ayuntamiento which is the town hall that are worth seeing. The historical centre of town is where you will find the Plaza de Espana, where all the action takes place. Like most Moorish villages the ancient section of town has narrow winding streets and alleyways, which is a great place to look for those little hidden gems.

If you are up for a little walking then you have come to the right place. The surrounding countryside that makes up the Murcia region is perfect for these activities. Don't forget to bring a camera with you as there are some excellent photographic opportunities that you can't pass up. This unspoilt countryside has a multitude of well marked trails throughout the region. As you stroll along take the time to enjoy the ancient villages and historical markers you will pass on your sojourn.

When booking your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN, you will find that Lorca has all the necessary facilities to make your holiday complete. There is an array of shops where you can purchase just about anything you need along with some excellent local restaurants serving traditional Spanish cuisine. Like the rest of Spain, Lorca celebrates the local fiestas with great gusto especially the ten day Grand Feria held every September. If you find the local bars and cafes don't offer nightlife exciting enough, then an hour's journey away is the capital city of Murcia.
