Melbourne International Comedy Festival – A Phenomenal Comedic Experience

Hailing as the third largest comedy festival in the world, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is a significant cultural event in Australia. Following closely behind Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival and the Edinburgh Festival, it is known for its relaxed atmosphere among the three.

An annual event, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival brings much hype and anticipation amongst the locals. Taking over the comedy capital in Australia, Melbourne exudes an air of great enthusiasm during the festival, which features a large collection of exciting programs for the travellers. A festival that occurs every autumn, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival takes place around the city. Established in 1987, the festival was the brainchild of Peter Cook and Barry Humphries. The 2011 festival will be in celebration of its 25th anniversary and will draw a large crowd of over 500,000 people. Hugely popular amongst the community, it has the record of selling more tickets than the prestigious event of the Australian Festival.

The 2011 festival will take place on the 30th March and will go on until 24th April.  One of its main highlights will be the televised Gala, which flaunts performances by award-winning comedians. As flagship event at the festival, it is a much-loved attraction that brings much laughter among the audience.

Other features include the Great Debate, the Raw Comedy, Class Clowns and the Comedy Zone. Amongst these, the Raw Comedy stands out the most, which brings together budding comedians for an open mic competition. To qualify for the National Grand Final, participants will have to go through a series of levels, performing on a high podium, in front of a large crowd. The winner will receive the rare opportunity to visit the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the leading international comedy festival in the world. In addition, travellers can also indulge in the Road Show, Opening Night, Jeez Louise, the Very Big Laugh Out and Humorists Read Humorists.
