Rajkot is a City in India

Rajkot is a city of Gujarat state in India. The bustling town was once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra and is also a former British government headquarters. Rajkot has good air, road and railway networks that connect it to other parts of the region.

Rajkot is a junction on the Western Railway, Viramgam Okha meter gauge line. Regular trains connect Rajkot to other important cities in Gujarat and India. There are trains for Delhi, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin, Coimbatore and Bhopal from Rajkot. There is also a meter gauge service to Veraval.

The City was founded in the year of 1610 by Vibhaji Jadeja and Raju Sandhi. Today it is best known as the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan or Prime Minister to the king of Saurashtra. Today Rajkot is a city vibrant with business activities and one of the major cities of Gujarat.

The city is located on the bank of river which remains dry except the monsoon months of July to September. The average maximum temperature is 43 the minimum being 24. The city has cooler nights compared to the hot days. There are three seasons observed here in different months of year as winter October to February, summer March to June and monsoon July to September.

The small town has a population of 1.2 million people.

There are good accommodation options available in Rajkot. Most of the hotels are in the budget to mid range categories.

Places to visit include some of the following.

Gandhijis ancestral home in 1880 which now is a memorial museum containing photographs and personal effects.

The Watson Museum is in the Jubilee Gardens. The Museum commemorating Colonel John Watson is a good introduction to Saurashtras cultural heritage. A huge 19th century marble statue of Queen Victoria is fascinating. There are many splendid portraits and photographs of royal princes of Saurashtra and European dignitaries, handicrafts, pottery and princely relics.

The Rajkumar College is Rajkot oldest schools whose foundation stone was laid in 1868. The college has a history of 136 years and has had students from all walks of life. In 1938 on the initiatives of its founding members, the College became a Public School. The college itself is also a founding member of the Indian Public Schools Conference.

Come and have fun and dont forget to enjoy yourself.A great place to be.
