Rome weather has a reputation for hot and dry summers, which makes a vacation during that time of year less than appealing. But historical weather patterns show otherwise.
The average monthly high temperature for Rome, Italy, is 69 degrees Fahrenheit, the World Weather Organization says. Those monthly average highs reach more than 83 degrees in July and August, which makes those months comparable to other vacation destinations in the summer. But the summer is quite dry.
The average monthly highs, which are usually the peak daytime temperatures, reach their low point in the mid-50s during December, January, February and March.
The average monthly low temperature throughout the year is 51 degrees. It is more than 60 degrees in June, July, August and September, while it declines to the upper 30s in January and February.
Rome has wide variation in precipitation each month. It experiences about 2.4 inches of rain a month, and each month averages six rain days throughout the year. Precipitation, which is mostly rain and some snow, exceeds three inches a month during the city's late fall and early winter months of October, November, December and January. November is the wettest months with more than four inches of precipitation and 10 rain days.
In contrast, the summers are dry with June and July historically seeing less than an inch of rain and two rain days each month.
Based on the historical weather patterns, the best months to visit Rome are May, June and September for people who like moderate temperatures, while July and August are fine for warmer days.
October through January are less than ideal months to visit, and November in particular should be avoided because of the highest chance of precipitation during the entire year.
