Royal Botanic Gardens

Located near the centre of Melbourne, the Royal Botanic Gardens are regarded as the finest botanical gardens in Australia and among the best in the World. Established in 1846, the gardens began as nothing but a completely uninspiring mixture of swampy marshland and rocky outcroppings.

Today the gardens are home to more than 51,000 individual plants that represent over 12,000 different species. In addition to the variety of botanical life that is housed here, the gardens themselves have become an impressive natural sanctuary for a variety of native wildlife including black swans, kookaburras, and bell birds.

The gardens themselves offer a magnificent walking path to stroll through a lush and healthy landscape that is filled with greenery. Visitors to the gardens can view the wide range of plants that are set out in a landscaped environment with a lake as the central feature. The gardens are so impressively large that visitors should be careful not to get lost within its vast grounds.

The gardens are also home to the National Herbarium of Victoria which is in itself home to more than a million preserved plant specimens. These specimens are used for plant classification purposes.

The Royal Botanic Gardens also feature tea rooms, cafes and reception centres that serve to offer additional services to visitors. Another item that is not actually part of the garden but enjoys close association is the Tan. This is a track that runs alongside one of the boundaries of the garden and was originally used a horse racing track. Today it has become an extremely popular venue among joggers in Melbourne.

Visitors to Melbourne should definitely not pass up the opportunity to visit the Royal Botanic Gardens especially since access to the gardens is completely free. Staying in one of the hotels in Melbourne that is located near this vast reserve of nature will grant easy access to this destination. Langham Hotel Melbourne is not only close to this destination but also offers an exemplary range of services and facilities that ensure for a comfortable stay in Melbourne.
