Located in South East Asia, the Kingdom of Cambodia is a land of many fascinating sites and experiences. Though not as popular as its regional neighbours such as Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, Cambodia too is slowly but surely picking up as a popular travel destination in South East Asia. The two most popular cities in Cambodia among tourists are its capital Phnom Penh and Siem Reap City.
A diverse city in many ways, Siem Reap offers a unique combination of colonial and Chinese architecture which is quite obvious around the city’s Old French Quarter and Old Market. The town itself features Apsara dance performances, silk farms and a variety of craft shops while its suburbs consist of rice paddy fields, bird sanctuaries as well as fishing villages. The city is most popular known because of its close proximity to the famed Angkor Wat.
The premier attraction of the area, the Angko Wat contains the ruins of the once glorious Khmer civilization. Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Angkor Wat consists of five towers that rise to form one majestic central tower. The wall areas feature complex and detailed carvings from Hindu mythology. The magnificent ancient royal city of Angkor Thom is yet another popular archaeological site.
Other popular attractions include the Cambodia Landmine Museum which is maintained by a former child soldier of the Khmer Rouge regime and the Angkor National Museum which features a fascinating collection of ancient relics and artefacts. Shopaholics will enjoy visiting the Central Market, Psar Chaa and the Phsar Leu Thom Thmei where many items are available for purchase at really bargain prices.
For travellers, the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor is the premier choice of hotel accommodation in Siem Reap. The property itself is more than 75 years old and offers guests with an exclusive experience combining historical splendour with contemporary amenities. This five star hotel in Siem Reap is an attraction in itself and puts guests in close touch with all the area’s main hotspots.
