The 16th Asian Games: A Great Way to Discover Guangzhou

After much preparation, the city of Guangzhou, China is well and ready to play host to the 2010 Asian Games this November. Much preparation included several infrastructure projects as well as the creation and renovation of several sporting venues and new facilities. But besides the much anticipated event, the Games will also pave the way for sports enthusiasts and tourists alike to discover the city's rich historical and cultural charms.

Taking place from November 12 to 27, 2010, the XVI Asiad will begin with an opening ceremony in Haixinsha Island in the Pearl River. For this, thousands of professional athletes representing 45 Asian countries will compete in 476 events in 42 sports. With different events happening in 53 competition venues all over the city, it will also give spectators and participants the opportunity to visit some of Guangzhou's must-see destinations.


Besides the undoubtedly remarkable sporting arenas, the city is also home to some of China's impressive museums such as the Guangzhou City Art Museum. Located in Yue Xiu district, the museum houses over 10,000 pieces of art work. Another is the Guangdong Revolutionary History Museum in Lingyuan Xi Lu, with its exhibition illustrating the country's history from the Opium War to the founding of the People's Republic of China.

From history and art to natural treasures, Guangzhou also includes a whole slew of parks and wildlife areas. At the north entry of Baiyun Mountain, Yuntai Garden covers a vast area adorned with an assortment of rare flowers and trees. Guangzhou Xiangjiang Safari Park in Panyu district boasts of 460 species of animals, making it the largest animal park in China.

Other structures include The Five Immortals Temple along Huifu Road. This historical structure is dedicated to the legend of 5 immortals that descended into the city from heaven and was constructed during the Northern Song Dynasty. Another famous attraction is the Temple of Six Banyan Trees which dates back to the 6th century and including a towering 17 story, eight-sided pagoda.

Not to be outdone by its glorious past, Guangzhou is fast becoming a city of contemporary structures. A great number of restaurants offering delectable Cantonese cuisine are found throughout the city as well as bars and nightclubs. A wide range of Guangzhou hotels also provide comfortable accommodations and several shopping malls provide a wide variety of choices for an unforgettable stay.
