The Algarve on the southern coast of Portugal is a perfect winter holiday destination for those looking for a low cost break to escape the Northern European winter. Within a 2 minute walk from the hotel there are a number of outdoor cafes and restaurants surrounding the Marina, where visitors can enjoy the local food and drink of the Algarve. On the outskirts of Faro there are reasonably priced hotels at the Ibis and the Monaco (both are within 3 or 4 km from the airport. The Hotel Aeromar in Faro beach is also reasonably priced, and has a great local bar with excellent value food and drink.
If you are based in Faro, a car rental from Faro Airport can be found for around 10 Euros per day in winter. From Faro, it is possible to get to the spain border in an hour, and the towns of Tavira, Albufeira, Quarteira, Lagos and many more are all within 1-1,5 hours drive. There is a good coastal train service from Faro to Tavira, so if you prefer not to drive, the train is a good option. Whatever you are looking for, the Algarve will offer you a friendly welcome and is a place that you will want to visit again and again.
