The Best Parks to Visit in Dublin

Posted: Sep 03, 2009 |

Dublin is on the eastern edge of southern Ireland – but despite its proximity to the Irish Sea this city has its fair share of open and green spaces for its inhabitants and visitors to enjoy.

If the weather is good and you want to see one of the most popular parks of all, head for Saint Stephen’s Green. This is over three hundred years old and is open all year round, even on Christmas Day. What better way to walk off a big meal than to explore such delights as the Fusiliers’ Arch and the fountain? You can even enter the park via this arch among other ways.

If you head out from Dublin city centre you will find another spectacular park to visit during your stay. This is Phoenix Park, and it holds the record for being the biggest enclosed park in the whole of Europe.

For this very reason you can expect to do a lot here. One of the best sights of all is the deer that roam within the park, providing you with ample opportunities to take some wonderful photos.

But if you have children with you then the best venue within the park is Dublin Zoo. Everything from tigers to lions and bats to golden tamarinds are here to marvel at. And with so much else to do in the park itself, from cycling to enjoying a nice picnic during good weather, you could almost spend your whole holiday in this park alone!

If you would prefer to visit somewhere a little more formal, there is something in Dublin for you as well. St Anne’s Park and Gardens are slightly further out to the north east of the city of Dublin, looking out onto North Bull Island.

Once again this is a huge space and it has a lot to offer. You will find an artificial pond here among other things, and if you like neat clipped gardens then you will appreciate the work that goes into keeping them looking good for all the visitors. The rose garden is worth a look, as is the miniature version which has been fairly recently added for the enjoyment of all visitors.

Don’t miss the Hurculanean Temple either, along with the other follies that are dotted around the park. You could easily spend several hours wandering around and escaping the vibrancy of the city.

There are lots of Dublin hotels you can stay in, many of which are close to these parks. Remember that most of the parks, particularly Phoenix Park, are very big, so that gives you lots of areas you can stay in to help you enjoy the best of Dublin with minimum travel.
