The Hometown of Andersen—Odense

Odense is located on the Fyn Island which is between the city of Copenhagen and Jylland peninsula. It is the place people should go through if they want to get to Jylland peninsula from Copenhagen.  After the Big Belt Bridge was finished in 1998, it only takes seventy-five minutes driving from Copenhagen to Odense which is a quiet and beautiful city.

Odense is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. The official date for the city finish is March 18th in 988 AD   which is over one thousand years from now. Odense is the center for clergy in middle ages as there are a lot of abbeys and churches here. Now, it is the third largest city in Denmark with a population of one hundred and eighty-five thousand. Nowadays, Odense is a vigorous and modern city, a trade city of very importance and an education center. There are universities, research centers, commercial colleges and colleges of art and music.

Odense is world famous as it is the hometown of Andersen although it is small. It welcomes people of different nationalities and different estates from all over the world. They all like the fairy tales written by Andersen and admire him so much. Except for Andersen, there is also another culture personality. This famous person is the famous composer Carl Nielsen who is born in a small town of the south of Odense.

Odense is a beautiful and charming city. The tall and red houses by both sides of the highway that leads to the city can make people have a very nice feeling. Going into the city, people can see the buildings with typically European style, not tall or stately, but modest and elegant. Odense River goes quietly through the city like a green belt. There are beautiful gardens and arboretums on both sides of the river. The thick flowers and trees together with the fresh air make Odense more beautiful. In the north of Odense, there is an open-air museum which shows the farm of foretime. Not far away from here, there is a small section for introducing city planning, architecture and new thought for interior trim.

There was once a weaving factory which is now rebuilt for culture and art in the city center of Odense. Modern art shows and all kinds of culture activities are held here every year. Opposite to the train station, there is a train museum which belongs to the national railway bureau of Denmark. Besides, Odense has a local museum for showing people the local culture and history, an art museum and a special museum for introducing all his life of the famous Carl Nielsen.

If you have time, it is good for you to spend a night to enjoy the local drama and opera of Odense in a local theatre. The content of the excellent programs is vast including comedy, magic, music and so on. It is so distinctive that one should not miss.
