Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy's second largest island. The most spoken language in Sardinia is, undoubtedly, Italian, but Sardinian is widely spoken here too. The capital of the island is Cagliari and is the islands largest town. The beaches of Sardinia are the major attraction.

The three main airports at Sardinia are located in Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero. These airports handle both domestic and international flights from most major European cities.

The Emerald Coast on Sardinia has long been a favourite of crowned heads, movie stars and millionaires. At the Costa Rei Beaches you will find some of the best beaches on the east coast of Sardinia, long stretches of beautiful sandy beaches with a whole host of water sports facilities and restaurants near the beach.

Local cuisine on the island is Pesce azzurro a Mediterranean fish and a speciality in Sardinia, while ravioli con ricotta a ravioli with fresh cheese is also a staple. The Sardinia people offers visitors the opportunity to eat in various farm houses the so called agriturismo. These farm houses serve wholesome and genuine traditional Sardinian specialities.

It should be remembered that under water fishing with the help of an oxygen tanks is illegal in the water off Sardinian and all other kinds of fishing is limited.

The island is rich in both handicrafts and arts, its baskets, carpets, pottery and its gold filigree jewellery are both unique and of the highest quality here.

In the city of Alghero in the north, a dialect of Catalan is spoken. Alghero is an old fishing town that has embraced the tourist industry. The town was a fortress town and parts of its old city walls remain. The town offers the tourist both the opportunity of a beach holiday or a small city break.

The cities of Cagliari, Olbia, Sassari and Alghero are the main towns on Sardinia where the nightlife is evident. While the many beach resorts, such as Porto Cervo and all around the Costa Smeralda, are also loaded with bars and pubs aimed at tourists Poetto has many small bars and terraced cafes.

The Regatta of Is Fassonis takes place each year at the beginning of August in the town of Cabras it is a speed competition of Is Fassonis, a gondola type boat of ancient origins built by hand intertwining a special kind of bulrush that grows in the Cabras lagoon.
