World renowned for its intriguing historical heritage, which stretches back across 6000 years, Egypt is awash with a plethora of ancient relics and spectacular landmarks. Indeed, from the legendary Giza Pyramid Complex and the Great Sphinx to the captivating city of Luxor and the winding River Nile, there is a range of breathtaking views to absorb. However, scratch the surface and there is a lot more to this unique country than first meets the eye.
Take the city of Sharm el Sheikh, as a prime example. Cited as being home to some of the most magnificent diving spots in the world, it is an awe-inspiring place filled with striking landscapes and dazzling beaches. Not only that, but its streets are also bursting with vibrancy and charm, and boast a lively nightlife, colourful markets and a number of sites of interest.
Known as the City of Peace and located at the southern tip of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on the narrow piece of coast between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai, Sharm el Sheikh is soaked in year-round sunshine. Tourism forms an important part of its economy, which is evident from the number of holiday resorts that have sprung up over the years: more than 85 new resorts were added between 1982 and 2000.
As previously mentioned, the city is famous for its range of diving opportunities. This is primarily due to the sheer abundance of underwater life present, as well as the Red Sea's calm, clear waters. In fact, there are more than 250 coral reefs to discover – reaching depths of up to 800 metres – as well as 1000 different species of fish.
The National Park of South Sinai, Ras Mohammed, is believed to be the best location for embarking on an underwater adventure. Situated just 12 km from Sharm el Sheikh, there are a number of underwater caves and diverse coral species to explore. The Straits of Tiran, on the other hand, present a host of chances to participate in fine wreck or drift diving.
In addition to exploring the Red Sea's underwater offerings, there is also a wealth of other activities available. Taking advantage of the wide stretches of desert land in the region, it is possible to go desert quad biking, head off on a camel safari or even play a round of golf on the Movenpick championship course.
This ancient land has a lot to offer tourists, from fascinating historical journeys to world-class diving opportunities. With the range of Egypt holidays available, there is something to tickle every traveller's fancy, whether they're looking for fun in the sun or a spot of rest and relaxation. As is clear to see, there is a lot more to Egypt than its pyramids!
