Phnom Penh is the largest city in Cambodia and is also its capital city. During the early decades of the 20th century, the city was popularly known as the "Pearl of Asia" and is the main hub for the country’s economic, political, social and cultural development. Since Cambodia is comparatively a less popular nation than its regional neighbours like Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia many of its sites remain ‘unspoilt’ and ‘untouched’. This makes Phnom Penh and Cambodia’s main cities a virtual treasure trove ready for the traveller to discover.
For a country that’s seeped in centuries of history and Buddhist culture, it’s not surprising that Cambodia offers many historic and archaeological sites for the traveller to enjoy. The Wat Phnom, Phnom Chisor Temple and the Silver Pagoda are must-see places of religious and historic value while a visit to the Royal Palace is almost obligatory.
Cambodia’s civil war and the tyrannical Khmer Rouge ravaged this beautiful country for many years. Some of the infamous icons and structures of those dreadful years have today been converted in to museums that attract a vast number of tourists throughout the year. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum which used to be a detention and torture chamber, and the Choeung Ek Killing Fields which used to be the Khmer Rouge’s execution grounds are two of these places dedicated to Khmer Rouge victims. The beautiful National Museum and the Independence Monument are also attractions worth visiting in Phnom Penh.
Travellers looking to pick up a souvenir or two will be surprised at what the Phnom Penh Central Market and the Russian Market offers them. The vendors at these flea markets often boast that they offer everything under the sun, and those who visit these markets seldom disagree!
For the more nocturnally inclined traveller, Phnom Penh will not be a disappointment with the many nightclubs, bars and taverns open till the wee hours of the morning. Some of the more popular nightspots include the ‘Heart of Darkness’ and the ever popular Martini Pub.
The flagship among Cambodia hotels, the Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh presents guests with an astonishing combination of olden times with contemporary luxurious living. The property reeks of history and its elegance and charm is truly unparalleled. The premier 5 star hotel in Phnom Penh is located a short drive away from the Phnom Penh International Airport and many other popular attractions including the Central Market, Russian Market, the Royal Palace and the National Artefacts Museum.
