Things To Do In Washington D.C

Washington DC, the capital of United States was founded on July 16, 1790. It is located near the eastern coast of the USA on the north bank of Potomac River and is bordered by Virginia to southwest and Maryland to the other sides.

The landscape is nearly flat with some gently rolling hills and shallow valleys. The city has a total area of 177 square km and a dynamic population of approximately 590,000 residents.

Washington is a bustling city which swells to over a million people during work weeks as commuters flow in. The city has three major natural flowing streams, the Potomac River and its two tributaries; Anacostia River and Rock Creek. The Potomac River flows into the Chesapeake Bay, located along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States.

Washington has a climate which varies widely. Summers tend to be hot and humid, with daily high temperatures in July and August average 80-90 degrees where as the winters are quite cold with temperatures intermittently falling below freezing from December through March.

Washington DC is well planned city designed by the French architect Pierre L'Enfant and has some resemblance to Paris.

A major tourist attraction is the National Mall which is an open park in the center of the city. Nearby attractions include the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and National World War II Memorial. Other places of interest to tourists include National Archives, Tidal Basin and District of Columbia War Memorial.

Washington DC is a city of variety and contrast. The central area is beautifully designed with large broad avenues lined with magnificent buildings and monuments. The green parks surrounding the large buildings make a picturesque scene.

The area is known as one of the more cosmopolitan cities in United States, being home to immigrants from all parts of the world. Politicians, diplomats and leaders play their part in making the land what it is.

There are three major airports, the Regan International, Dulles Airport and the Baltimore International airport. Getting in and out of the city is easy but traffic within the city can be baffling.
