Traveling to Odessa Ukraine

After fourteen years of living in the United States I found an excellent opportunity to go back to where I was born and had spent the first four years of my life. Was I scared? A little. In the last decade Ukraine, as many other Eastern European countries, has changed dramatically. The old city streets that I knew since my birth, have changed their names and appearances; the old stores, where I bought candies and toys, disappeared. They had been replaced with the new boutiques and art galleries with prices that would surprise even the most experienced Rodeo Drive shopaholics.

We rented an apartment in Odessa through the local agency, but later moved to a little apart-hotel on Sadovaya Street. When you search for nice and comfortable Odessa apartments on the internet, you are usually blown away with hundreds of options. After careful research you can easily notice, that many sites offer the same apartments. The only difference is the price and the web design of every page you are looking at. If you find the owner of the apartments, you are guaranteed to have the best rates, which is extremely hard to do, because most of the apartments are represented by agencies, which take care of maintenance, advertisement, security expenses, and other things, which drive prices up.

We took a look at a few modern Odessa hotels that have been built in recent years. The cheapest rate of the famous hotel "Odessa" was 95 dollars per night. The lady explained that we would have to pay extra for each additional person in the room. So we were back at were we began: apartments. We rented apartment in the center of the city near Deribasovskaya street. For $60 per night we could afford the renovated one bedroom Odessa apartment with Jacuzzi tub, high-speed internet, DVD player, washing machine, fully stocked kitchen and maid service, which was a pleasant surprise for me and my friend.

We spent two weeks in Odessa, filled with exciting trips to the beach, night clubs, and restaurants with Ukrainian food. We spoke with a couple Americans that we met in the famous Irish Pub on Deribasovskaya steet, and most of them were planning to come back to Odessa again in the next year or two. There was something special in the air of this romantic city that made us forget about hundreds of little things that had to be taken care of when we get back to the States. We knew that we would come back to Odessa again, no matter what.
