Victoria's Tourist Attractions

Victoria is the smallest of the five states that comprise mainland Australia. However, it is by no means the least interesting. In fact, it has plenty of attractions that would rival those in the other states. And discovering this attractions is definitely the best part of any vacation trip to the state.

The state is located to the south eastern most part of the continent. Offshore from it is the state of Tasmania. Much like the other coastline states, Victoria enjoys a cool climate because of the winds coming from the ocean. However, the state can also be a bit too cold during the winter months because of its location.

Victoria can also be a little crowded at times, being the densest among Australian states. The state is also highly urbanized. However, these has not deterred the state from having a very lucrative tourism industry. And tourism in the state isn't limited only to the cities. In fact, Victoria has a wide array of natural wonders that will definitely be to the liking of sightseers.

Melbourne is the state's capital and chief tourist destination. The city's main attractions are the many museums and parks that you can visit. One of the most popular places to go to is the Melbourne Aquarium. The aquarium houses a large amount of specimens that can be found off the state's coast. Melbourne Zoo is another popular destination for animal lovers. Here, you can get a glimpse of the various animals that are indigenous only to Australia, as well as those that are already familiar to many foreigners.

Melbourne also has some of the highest observation decks in the southern hemisphere. Head to the Eureka Tower to see the city from more than three hundred meters up. On the other hand, you can also scour the Docklands to find more interesting land marks.

Beechworth is another interesting city in Victoria. The main attraction of this town are well preserved buildings dating back from the 19th century. Many of these buildings are in fact still being used today, not only as museums, but also for other purposes. If you are the type who are interested in macabre stories then head to the Beechworth Asylum to get a guided tour around the facility and hear interesting stories about it. And there are the historical mines to visit in the outskirts of the city.

As have been said before, natural wonder also are a main attraction in Victoria. The Twelve Apostles are among the most widely visited by tourists. These naturally shaped limestone pillars are located near the shore off Port Campbell National Park. Interestingly, although the name implies so, there are actually more than twelve of these stacks in the area.

For those who want to see penguins in their natural habitat, Philipp Island is the place to go. The island is a favorite nesting grounds for the fairy penguin, so you can expect to see thousands of them there on a daily basis. You need to be careful though in observing them so as not to disturb these birds.
