I can almost hear the ‘Flamin' young Sheila' comments being hurled at me. But let me explain.
Tourism Australia have found that that Aussies are loosing out on 121 million annual leave days, valued at about $31 billion in wages, by not taking their annual leave.
More than 60 percent of full-time Australian workers do not use their full annual leave entitlement in a year and more than one third of full time workers do not take any annual leave in a year at all.
Not only is annual leave accrual bad for business (employee morale, burn out, reduced productivity etc), it effects the economy as a whole - everyone looses!
Australians using 20% of their accrued leave on domestic holidays would result in 14 million extra leisure nights and $2 billion increase in leisure expenditure.
So what is going on Australia? I came here from Ireland in search of the laid back, beach like lifestyle but it sounds like you Aussies are as over worked as everyone else!
How disappointing. (Although when I think about it no one in Neighbours ever took annual leave either).
Respondents said it was due to ‘workplace issues' that they did not take their leave. The only ‘workplace issues' that would stop me taking my leave would have to involve some sort of kidnapping plot and being locked in the storeroom.
A break away from work can give you the chance to recharge and reenergize, meaning you will be more productive when you return to work. If you can squeeze in a holiday and change of scenery, all the better! After all, you are entitled to it.
Thanks for the info Tourism Australia, but you're preaching to the converted.
Now I'll just send that report to the boss, see if I can extend my Christmas leave...
