Yangon, previously called Rangoon was the former capital of Burma, now called Myanmar. Following March 2006 the military government changed the capital of Myanmar to Naypyidaw. Nevertheless Yangon is still the capital of Yangon Division and is the largest city in Myanmar spanning an area of almost 600 square kilometers. Yangon is also the most populated city in Myanmar with a population of over 4 million. The city is also the most commercialized city in Myanmar and also has the most number of colonial era buildings in Southeast Asia. Though many of these colonial buildings are in a state of decay, they showcase the history of Yangon and the life of 19th century Yangon during the British colonial era.
The Shwedagon Pagoda in the city of Yangon can be considered to be the iconic symbol that is used to distinguish Yangon. The pagoda has in many ways obtained this right since it was one of the earliest structures in Yangon (then a small village called Dagon). The Shwedagon pagoda was the center around which much of the many other buildings were constructed to form what is much of present day Yangon city. The existence of the Dagon village can be traced back to the 6th century AD. Along the Shwedagon Pagoda Road one comes across the Defense Services Museum.
At the Defense Services Museum one can get to learn about the history of the Burmese army, which has played a major role in the country’s history. Collections of tanks, armoured vehicles, weapons and even fighter jets and helicopters are on display at the Defense Services Museum.
While in Yangon make sure to check into a Yangon hotel. The hotel would provide with some Yangon hotel accommodation and various other facilities.
