How to Choose a Wheelchair Lift

Choosing a wheelchair lift depends on what the person's needs are. How do you choose the right one?

A wheelchair lift is also called a platform lift. It is a mechanical device to help disabled people overcome difficulties in reaching the steps or stairs. It is a powered device made to lift a wheelchair together with the disabled person in order to reach the next level, either it be stairs or a car. The lift is usually powered by hydraulics or electricity. For electric lifts, it usually comes with a manual backup in case there is a loss of power.

There are different types of wheelchair lifts. To choose a type of this kind of lift would greatly depend on the need of the disabled person.

1. Inclined platform is best for indoors and outdoors. These lifts are common in buildings, schools and even churches. It is attached on the inside of the stair railing.

2. Vertical platforms are usually found in the homes. They are also known as home elevators and are customer built. These lifts are placed beside the stairways but are not attached to it.

3. Portable wheelchair lifts are movable or transferable. It is best used for stages, platforms and bleachers.

4. Portable vertical lifts have the same function as that of the vertical platforms but are just portable or movable.

One can choose the type of lift that suits his needs. He can choose the size and shape he wants. However, the very important thing that should be considered when choosing a wheelchair lift is the safety feature that comes with it.
