A Slipped Disc Doesn't Have to be a Major Issue

Posted: Nov 24, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Most of us make the mistake of ignoring back pain until it becomes agonizing.  If you don't take care of the issue immediately, major damage to the spinal cord can occur.  If you choose to ignore the pain or attempt to just "deal with it", you run the risk of some major complications occurring.

So, what exactly is a slipped disc?  There are 24 vertebrae that form the spinal cord and they are placed on top of each other to form a column.  The spaces between any two vertebrae are filled with a jelly which is called the "disc." It absorbs any kind of shock and cushions all movements. This disc can bulge backward and trap the nerves that are connected to the spinal cord.  This condition is known as slipped disc and it causes an enormous amount of pain in the back.

If you are experiencing such pain, the first step is to remain calm and not panic. Don't be under the misconception that a slipped disc means that you have to undergo surgery. Most cases of slipped disc can be treated successfully with the right combination of medicines and exercises.

Let's briefly touch on the types of treatments that are commonly used for a slipped disc:

Lie down in the correct posture by propping yourself up and resting on your elbows. This should be done for a few seconds.

A slipped disc, also known as herniated disc, may need an anti-inflammatory treatment based on the intensity of the pain.  Consult with your doctor before taking this type of medication.

There are specialized exercises that can successfully correct the alignment of the disc and push it back between the vertebrae.

The spine is made up of many bones called vertebrae. These are roughly circular and between each vertebra is a 'disc'. The discs are made of strong 'rubber-like' tissue which allows the spine to be fairly flexible. A disc has a stronger fibrous outer part, and a softer jelly-like middle part called the nucleus pulposus.

A slipped disc can be caused by two factors. First, it can lose its water content, making it degenerative. This means that the disc's ability to function as a shock-absorber is compromised, making that portion of the spine less malleable.
